Class Outline.
The
first hour we were to complete a group exercise; Generating design ideas,
inventing options followed by a practical “design options”.
Group Exercise.
For
this week’s group exercise “Experimentation: Exploring & Challenging” we
were to choose the best of their designs from last week’s practical (Combo
Words) which ours was “Dog Camping”. With in the group were to vote on which
one and using the idea of experimentation discuss and research how each chosen
design concept could be explored and challenged. Scribing each finding from all
three designs with these topics: Design Exploration and Design challenges.
End Result.

Exploration and Challenges:
The use of Fibonacci
Spiral ‘Golden Ratio’ was explored as well as the overall layout and use of
simple shapes. The challenges with this design is that the set use of squares
than irregular shapes will affect the layout. If animated GIFs will supply
interactivity or not, and how different
browses are affected by multiple AP Divs (floating).

Cheril’s pop art.
Exploration and Challenges:
Texture and
saturation were explored with this design. The overall image was challenged by the
patterned shape, right setting of blue and the fish picture placement.
Practical.
Design
Exploration:
Choose
your favorite design concept from all your current works.
-
Use
any tools we’d like.
-
And
Describe.
Through a combo of research and creative
thinking explore the possibilities of concept experimentation, variation and
evaluation.
List these items clearly, draft examples and
explain your thinking.
-
Two
experiments.
-
Pros
& Cons.
-
Choosing
& Refusing.
My design:
I chose my
Helmet warrior being attacked by octopi, the tools I used were led pencil (2H,
HB and 2B) on an A3 size white paper. The effect of depth I believe really gave
it that ’oomph!’ factor.
Experiments:
Experiment 1: Fix and Colour fill in Adobe Illustrator CS5.
Experiment 1: Fix and Colour fill in Adobe Illustrator CS5.
Use of colour and an over lay to represent the underwater feel.
Pros: Gives life to the image, adds a cartoon-ish style, can be used for
a spread.
Cons: Doesn’t look realistic, no real gradients or texture, time spent
adjusting layers.
Choosing and refusing: choosing the right colour fixtures, refuse black/out lines? How deep
is this scene? (Brightness)
Experiment 2:
Retouching in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
The use
of blurring and fill, paint brush settings and glow.
Pros: Give the real life feel, could add more depth to the image. To be used
for a cover page for my VD for Illustration.
Cons: Lack of knowledge in Adobe Photoshop CS5, the right setting of
blur, exploring and adjusting paint brush pattern settings.
Choosing
and refusing: The transparency levels of the
background, whether or not to add more aquatic life to the over image. Colours
or the octopi.
